kara walker at the whitney
The new Kara Walker exhibit at the Whitney is absolutely amazing. I went yesterday — the opening day — and was blown away by the power and breadth of her work.
The Whitney doesn’t allow photography, so I only have these links to post:
New York Times review by Holland Cotter
The Whitney Museum Kara Walker Page
For me, the video installations are the highlight of the show. I’ve seen Walker’s cut-outs and prints at the MoMA and the Walker Art Center (in Minneapolis). So it was great to see the new development in Walker’s art. The videos combine the orchestrated tone of the cut-outs and more frenetic feel of her drawings into something really remarkable.
The show is titled “Kara Walker: My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love” and runs until February 3, 2008.

These past few months I’ve been making Xerox-transfer prints using photos, words, and other images of Union Seminary. To see more of these go to http://utsprints.blogspot.com

the dinner party
Went to the Brooklyn Museum to see the Global Feminisms exhibit (which was small but good) and also viewed their recent permanent installation of Judy Chicago’s “The Dinner Party.” It’s dated but still effective. Her use of ceramics and fabric is great. I loved seeing this. I included the only biblical character at the table (there are saints and other religious women). Note the names written on the floor, too.
I’m also including this photo of the Brooklyn Museum lobby. A male party.

canal living
I took these photos on a trip to London this past January. These strangely appropriate housing units sit right on a canal which you can walk along for miles (this part is near Camden Town). I now live not so far from the Gowanus Canal which is experiencing a revitalization since the canal has been cleaned up (and doesn’t put off such a foul odor). But you can’t walk along the Gowanus.

serra at MoMA

I’ve been impressed by the MoMA lately. The wall drawing in the main space and the Richard Serra exhibit were amazing (the Serra is a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit: I highly recommend it). Inside the museum, the second floor includes Serra’s newer work which is absolutely amazing, and the six floor presents a retrospective of his work.

I included the second photo because it gives an idea of the size of his sculptures.
